Studio
Architecture begins before the architect.
Kamuna Design Studio is a Zambian practice based in Lusaka, working across architecture, urban design, interiors and landscape. We make places shaped by their inhabitants, climate and the cultural and material knowledge from which they emerge.
The architect enters an ongoing place, not an empty site.
We attend to the land, the patterns of everyday life and the knowledge already held by the people who live there. A building is never isolated: it changes relationships among people, resources and place.
We remain deliberately close to every commission, from the first conversation and sketch through technical development and construction. That continuity carries design intent, material judgement and accountability through delivery.
A building is justified only when what it returns is greater than what it takes.
That requires asking what is taken and from whom, what is returned and to whom, over what period, and who is permitted to decide whether the exchange was worthwhile.
In practice, this may mean changing a brief, surrendering buildable area, crediting knowledge that is not ours, or refusing work whose harm cannot be justified. We test each project through four obligations: attend, refuse, make and return.
Creative and executive leadership.
Kamuna Design Studio is led by Emmanuel Nawa Kamuna and Tawanda R. S. Kamuna, working with a multidisciplinary team across design, technical delivery and practice management.
